It obtained the municipal privileges of a free royal town of the Kingdom of Hungary in The copper mining town acquired its present picturesque look in the Late Middle Ages when the prosperous burghers built its central churches, mansions, and fortifications. It is also the home of Matej Bel University. Several variations of Bystrica Byztherze, Bystrice, Bystrzice etc. Although the first written record of the name Byzterchebana dates fromit was rarely used afterwards.

In the late 16th century the use of the mining adjective became more frequent as in Bystrzicze na baniech or Bystricze Banskaboth from The present city was built upon a former Slavic settlement. Other sources claim that due to the attack of Mongolsin —44, the town ceased to exist.
The city flourished as a regional mining center. The Ottoman Empire 's thrust northwards led the magistrate to improve the city's fortifications with modern stone walls inbut the Turks never occupied the region. The copper deposits had been all but depleted by the 18th century, but new industries, such as timberpaper, and textiles, developed. The railway reached the town from Zvolen in It has been a university town since the s. Its largest Matej Bel University was founded in The Hron River curves through the city from the east to the south.
All three are protected areas because of their environmental value. It is characterized by a significant variation between hot summers and cold, snowy winters.

In the midth century, the town entered the history when in August became the centre of the Slovak National Uprising. The second largest insurrection against the German Nazi regime following the Yugoslav partisan war took place here. The Monument to the SNP and the open-air museum situated in the park near the town centre commemorate these events.
It expanded to a modern central Slovakian metropolis and became the sixth biggest town of Slovakia. The buildings in the historic centre are the parts of the Town Monument Reserve. It was built in as part of the town prison. The most beautiful building of the southern row of the square is Thurzov dom Thurzos House.
The original appearance of the castle disappeared by removal of a substantial part of town walls. Only a quarter of the original town walls and three bastions of the original four survive. The dominant architecture of the square is now the former Barbican with a tower. The parish church of the Virgin Mary was started as early as In the interior, apart from other gems, the Late Gothic wing altar of St. Another castle church consecrated to the Holy Cross was built next to the northern walls of castle fortifications in Send to a friend.
